Utility Survey Services in Melbourne

Locate and map underground services for a defined Melbourne work area, with the methods, evidence and limits recorded for the next design or construction decision.

A utility survey can combine current records, site evidence, field locating and survey pickup. Physical exposure is a separate step when a selected service point needs direct confirmation.

Utility locating and survey work for an underground services plan

From work area to usable survey record

The scope should match the decision. A field mark-out, coordinated design plan and surveyed physical exposure require different evidence and deliverables.

Define the decision

Show us the proposed excavation, design corridor or clash review and tell us how the result will be used.

Review records and site

Review current BYDA responses, owner instructions, site plans and visible evidence within the agreed work area.

Locate and investigate

Select EM, GPR or accessible traceable methods for the service and conditions; recommend exposure where surface evidence is insufficient.

Survey and hand over

Capture agreed findings and deliver the specified plan or data with methods, boundary, assumptions and limitations.

Confirm the deliverable before field work

Request the output your team will actually use. Available outputs depend on the agreed scope and may include field marks, a PDF plan, surveyed points or lines, photographs, CAD or GIS files and quality or confidence notes.

Specify the coordinate system, file format, investigated boundary and whether proposed design data must be overlaid. See our utility data deliverables guide.

Send with your enquiry

  • Site address and marked work or survey boundary
  • Planned excavation, design or investigation activity
  • Current BYDA responses and asset-owner instructions
  • Private-service and as-built plans, where available
  • Target date, access and traffic constraints
  • Required marks, plan, survey data and file formats

Limits the handover should make clear

BYDA says asset-owner plans indicate infrastructure presence rather than exact location. EM requires a usable signal path; GPR response varies with the target and ground; a depth indicator is not the same as a physical measurement.

The survey record should identify areas that could not be accessed, services expected but not detected, unknown responses, where alignments were inferred and any points recommended for further investigation or physical exposure.

If the work footprint, site conditions or field marks change, the team controlling the work should reassess the information and owner requirements before continuing.
